If BJP Has Guts, Remove Gandhi Photo On Rupee Note: DCM Challenges!

Karnataka deputy chief minister and senior MLA on behalf of the Congress party DK Shivakumar is a very dynamic and outspoken personality.  Now he has a pretty big challenge for the BJP and let us have a look into the same.

While taking part in a protest against the central government’s decision to remove the rural employment law named after Mahatma Gandhi, DCM Shiva Kumar had a strong challenge to the BJP.

“The BJP is playing a very dangerous game with the constitution and public harmony. They have bought politics into virtually everything, and they will be made to pay the price soon. If they really have the guts, then they must remove the photo of Mahatma Gandhi on rupee notes” Shiva Kumar stated. 

The deputy chief minister even took out of ₹500 note while challenging the BJP to remove Gandhi’s photo. It is evident that he has taken a strong pro Gandhi stance in this context and wants to irk the center with the same. 

But the fundamental point here is that Gandhi image on the Indian rupee note is inbribed in the Indian civil society and the challenge that DK threw to the center is virtually impractical.

Delhi smog tightens grip: AQI stays ‘very poor’ at 370; flights delayed as visibility dips

  Large parts of Delhi were engulfed in a dense layer of toxic smog, sharply reducing visibility and causing discomfort for residents. RK Puram was particularly affected, with an AQI of 374, placing it in the 'very poor' category, according to CPCB data.

Areas around Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium were also blanketed in thick smog, with the AQI reported at 349, again categorised as 'very poor'. Najafgarh recorded a slightly lower AQI of 284, but the area remained shrouded in hazardous haze.

In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked all Stage-IV measures of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR to rein in pollution.The smog was not confined to the capital. A thick layer of fog also covered Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, reducing visibility there as well.For reference, AQI categorisation is as follows: 0-50 ‘good’, 51-100 ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 ‘moderate’, 201-300 ‘poor’, 301-400 ‘very poor’, and 401-500 ‘severe’.

Flight operations under low visibility proceduresThe Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) issued a passenger advisory on Thursday morning amid dense fog, warning that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) were in force even as flight operations continued normally.

In the travel advisory posted at 4.30 am, airport authorities informed passengers that foggy conditions had reduced visibility levels, prompting the implementation of LVP to ensure safe aircraft operations.Officials clarified that there was no major disruption to flight services at the airport at the time of the advisory. “Low-visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” the advisory stated. Airport authorities urged travellers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest updates on departures and arrivals.CAQM flags road dust, wasteEarlier this month, CAQM deployed 19 teams for a road-inspection drive on December 12, as part of ongoing monitoring and enforcement under the statutory framework and provisions of GRAP. A total of 136 road stretches within the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) jurisdiction were inspected.The compiled data showed that 15 stretches had high visible dust levels, 38 had moderate dust, 61 recorded low dust intensity, and 22 stretches showed no visible dust. Accumulation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction & demolition (C&D) waste was observed on 55 and 53 stretches, respectively. Evidence of MSW or biomass burning was reported at six stretches.“These observations clearly indicate gaps and recurring negligence in the maintenance of the affected stretches,” the release said. It stressed the need for the DDA to enhance operational efficiency and implement prompt corrective measures through consistent and timely dust-mitigation interventions. The agency also needs to improve compliance across all road stretches for MSW and biomass burning.The commission noted that such incidents significantly impact particulate matter levels in Delhi. It emphasised the need for strengthened on-ground action, including regular mechanical sweeping, timely disposal of collected dust, maintenance of road shoulders and central verges, deployment of water-sprinkling and dust-suppression systems, and focused efforts to prevent open burning across all stretches maintained by the DDA.

Some words affect us more than others. It boils down to how they sound

Effective communication lies at the heart of human connection. It helps us collaborate with each other, solve problems and build relationships. And communicating clearly is a major consideration for most of us in most aspects of life.

But what if the way some words sound makes them more impactful in communication?

New research I coauthored, published in Cognition, suggests this might be the case. And it could help us all understand how to communicate better with each other.

What makes some words special?

Psycholinguistics is the study of the use and acquisition of language. A key concept in the field is known as “surprisal”. Surprisal is a measure of how expected something – for example, a word in a sentence or a sound in a word – is relative to what typically happens in the language.

All English words are built from the same vowels and consonants and follow the same rules of combination. But despite this, not all words are created equal. Words made up of unusual sequences of vowels and consonants sound more surprising to listeners. That makes them stand out in speech and affects how we process them.

We use information theory to calculate how surprising a word is. Information theory works by calculating how much information each speech sound contributes to an individual word.

Speech sounds that occur in highly predictable environments contribute relatively little information. These include sequences like /st/ as in “stick” and “stone”, and /an/ as in “can” and “and”. This is because lots of other words share the same sequences of sounds.

Speech sounds that occur in unusual environments contribute much more information. These include /koi/ like in “coil” and “coin”, and /sv/ as in “svelte” and “svabite”. This is because more unusual sequences of sounds are shared with fewer words in the lexicon.

Highly vivid words are more surprising

We applied an information theoretical analysis to data from a very large corpus of 51 million words of spoken American English – many of which were repeated – taken from movie and television subtitles.

This allowed us to assign each word in English a score showing how surprising its sounds are in English.

We then took these scores and cross-referenced them with the results of a battery of word-processing experiments. These included an auditory lexical decision task which required participants to decide whether what they heard were real words or not; a reading task; and several memory recognition tasks.

This revealed that highly vivid words – those that are very specific or concrete – are more surprising. It also revealed that both vividness and surprisal improves memory recognition.

For example, words like “dog” and “flower” are more vivid than words like “stun” and “plot”, and they also sound more surprising.

Using highly surprising word forms ensures their meaning is processed deeply and remembered better.

Challenging modern linguistics

The fact that highly vivid words sound more surprising than other words challenges the assumption in modern linguistics that the relationship between a word and its meaning is arbitrary and conventionalised.

For example, while English speakers use the sound sequence /tri:/ to refer to the concept of a “tree”, French speakers use the sequence /aʁbʁə/ (arbre) just as successfully. This shows that language users agree on what names to use within each speech community. This is what it means for language to be conventionalised.

India bucks US tariffs with November exports surge: What is behind the numbers, is it sustainable

India US Trade in November 2025: A combination of factors led to a 22 per cent surge in India’s exports to the US market in November after two consecutive months of decline in September and October. This made November one of the strongest months on record despite the 50 per cent US tariffs that have left a broad range of products uncompetitive in the American market. While exporters seem resilient, data suggest that it could be short-term factors and a trade deal could still be necessary for sustained growth.

Exports in November surged to the US as well as other markets, particularly China and Hong Kong, and to several European markets. Exports indicate strong signs of diversification, but exporters may have also benefited from the recent tensions between China and Japan. Indian exports, particularly seafood, have surged to China as Beijing has begun restricting imports from Japan. Indian exports to China jumped 90 per cent and to Hong Kong by 35 per cent last month.

Exports to European countries have also been on the rise ahead of the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from January 1. The new tax will raise duty on Indian engineering products from next year. In what typically triggers stocking, Indian exporters of engineering goods grew by 30 per cent, and exports to Germany, Spain, and Belgium surged 25 per cent, 180 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively.

Exporters absorbing costs to retain access in US

One of the prime reasons for the surge in Indian exports to the US is that exporters are hoping for a deal soon and are bearing the tariffs-related cost to maintain market access in anticipation of a trade deal. The first part of the deal, where the US would revoke 25 per cent tariffs, is expected, as India has stepped up crude imports from the US, signed an energy deal agreeing to source 10 per cent of its LPG imports from the US and is set to open its nuclear sector, which has been among the key US demands.

However, exporters have said that they are no longer receiving fresh orders and most orders will end by December. This could have a long-term impact, as Indian competitors such as Vietnam and Bangladesh have begun receiving orders that are moving away from India. Exporters from Tiruppur, for instance, said that they have lost nearly Rs 7,000 crore worth of winter orders from the US that will have a long-term impact on the manufacturing hub.

Base effect and Red Sea challenge

The nearly 20 per cent surge in cumulative goods exports in November has come due to a low base. Exports in November last year began bearing higher costs due to the Red Sea crisis that began in October 2024. The attacks carried out by the Houthi rebels had brought shipping through the crucial region to a standstill within weeks, resulting in shortages of containers and much higher costs due to the use of longer routes via the Cape of Good Hope.

Notably, large shipping companies continue to avoid the Red Sea shipping route, but the ceasefire agreements in Gaza have resulted in hope for reduced Houthi attacks. The Suez Canal Authority had said in a statement last month that Maersk container ships will resume transit via the canal on a partial basis from the beginning of December, before a full return, but a Maersk spokesperson said the company had not set a date, Reuters reported last month.

Growth in electronic & engineering exports from India 

Tariff-exempted goods such as electronic and drugs and pharmaceuticals grew 38 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. These categories likely resulted in a growth in exports to the US in November and are expected to continue going forward. Moreover, the US added more items, such as tea, coffee, spices, among other food items, to the exempted category. Exports across these categories also logged sharp growth.

Even engineering goods exports seem to have stabilised in November, growing over 30 per cent. This is the largest category of Indian exports, and India has been seeing an export surge to European countries in the last few months, as stated earlier.

Rupee depreciation aiding exporters

The sharp rise in exports in November also comes amid a rapid weakening of the rupee against the US dollar, with the 90-dollar mark being breached earlier this month in December. A weaker rupee is good for exporters as it makes Indian goods and services cheaper for foreign buyers.

The rupee, which hit a fresh all-time low on Monday after it fell to 90.79 per dollar during the day, was 5.6 per cent lower in November against the US dollar compared with the same month last year. This is despite the greenback having weakened sharply by almost 8 per cent over the last 12 months.

Trump Hit India With 50% Tariffs – Two Months Later, The Impact Fizzled Out; How PM Modi Turned The Tables

New Delhi: When US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, it initially sent ripples across several sectors. Imposed from August 27, 2025, the tariffs affected everything from engineering products to electronics and gems and jewellery. But within two months, India’s economy shrugged off the impact. By November, exports surged, imports eased and trade deficit witnessed a noticeable decline.

According to official data, India’s trade deficit in November fell to $24.53 billion, down from $31.93 billion a year earlier. This improvement reflects strong export performance in key sectors and reduced imports.

In comparison, October saw a trade deficit of $41.68 billion, highlighting a strong recovery. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said that November’s export growth effectively offset losses experienced in September and October due to the tariffs.

India’s exports in November rose 19.37 percent, reaching $38.13 billion, while imports fell 1.88 percent to $62.66 billion. Services exports also remained robust, with shipments to the United States increasing by $1.3 billion over last year to $6.98 billion. Even under a 50% tariff, U.S. demand for Indian goods remained steady, signalling strength in bilateral trade.

Looking at the broader April-November period, India’s merchandise exports reached $292.07 billion, while imports stood at $515.21 billion. Exports to the United States climbed to $59.04 billion, up from $53.01 billion in the same period last year.

Trade with other partners also strengthened as exports to the United Arab Emirates rose to $25.49 billion and imports stood at $40.81 billion, while imports from China grew to $84.27 billion and imports from Russia fell to $40.81 billion.

The Narendra Modi government’s proactive measures, including tax cuts, export incentives and labour reforms, helped protect the Indian economy from external pressures such as the US tariffs.

By strategically managing trade and domestic policies, India maintained its export momentum and reduced vulnerability to global trade disruptions, demonstrating a clear path toward self-reliance and economic resilience.
